Geoff, McCarthy's an attacking midfielder who in the long term could prove to be bargain. He made his first team debut at 15 and has previously turned down a move to Liverpool.

Had Celtic met Hamilton's asking price, he would have stayed in Scotland, but, with the number of midfielders Celtic have, he may have struggled to break into the side.

Wigan have apparently promised first team football, and playing down south will mean McCarthy no longer receives stick from fans, unhappy at him choosing to play for the Republic of Ireland, rather than Scotland.

Other young players to look out for include McCarthy's midfield partner at Hamilton, James McArthur, and Falkirk's Scott Arfield, another midfielder.

Promising strikers who could do well this season include Jamie Murphy of Motherwell, and David Goodwillie at Dundee United.

William, good to hear about the SPL. Interested in James McCarthy, what type of player is he? Do you think he'll do well at Wigan?

Are there any other good young prospects to look out for in the SPL this season?
